Berkeley County School Report for August 2011

The school district held their first ever "Stuff the Bus" on  August  8 - 13 collecting 13,000 items valued at $18,000.00  The WTP Goose Creek 9-12ers donated over 150 of those items valued at just over $200.00. Well done to all those that took part.
The district received the first ever in the nation "Partner in Prevention" award from the Darkness into Light Foundation. To achieve this most prestigious award every single employee in the school district ( roughly1,800)  received the training and was given a backround check.
Mr. Seager, Mead/Westvaco , Community Development & Parks of Berkeley COO  gave a presentation to  the School Board concerning the development of the Sheep Island Intrerchange. He  offered the school district 23.5 acers near the proposed development including interstructure roads to build a new school. Board member Doug Cooper pointed out we already  have a new middle school at Cane Bay opening in the fall of  2012 that we cannot afford to operate . The 5,000 acer proposed development between I-26 and US 176 is scheduled to begin by the end of this year and to be completed in 2014. This will include from 700 to 1,000 new homes.
The school district has decided to combine the ( Special Education) students and the ( Gifted & Talented) students into one Politically Correct heading of  EXCEPTIONAL STUDENTS.
There was a few of us from theWTP Goose Creek 9-12 and the LowCountry 9-12 that attended the State School Board Meeting in Columbia on August 18. This was done in response to a request for support from the State School Superintendent of Education, Mick Zais. Out of 17 board members there are only 3 conservatives. The liberals wasted no time attacking Dr. Zais on his decision not to accept $244,000.00 from the Federal Government that had all kinds of strings attached. They actually tried to pass a resolution that would force Dr. Zais to accept the money. This was foiled by the Board Attorney that informed them it was illeagle to do such a thing.  Bill Bates and Linda Esnor both addressed the board in support of Dr. Zais decision not to accept the money. Did I fail to mention that even if Dr. Zais had wanted the US Government money we weren't eligible for it ! The board and Congressman James Clyburn even wanted to change the law so we would qualify for the money !!
Because of receiving unexpected funds from the unclaimed lottery money the State Board is able to give a an extra $75 million for Special Education, $92 million more to the 16 school districts, buy 130 new school busses. This raises the dollars spent per child from $1788 to $1888 for this year only.
Finally, it was pointed out that the state has total authority over the school districts concerning SPECIAL EDUCATION. To me this seems to be in conflict with the PC comment above. End of report.
